MRX A2000 in Antioxidant Activity Research on Probiotics & Paraprobiotics
This Research Highlight introduces a published study demonstrating the use of the MRX A2000 Microplate Reader in antioxidant activity research involving probiotics and paraprobiotics. Research Background and Purpose
Probiotics have been widely studied for their health-promoting properties, but maintaining stable viability during storage and gastrointestinal passage remains a challenge. Paraprobiotics, consisting of inactivated microbial cells, have emerged as an alternative with comparable biological effects and improved stability. In this study, three Lactobacillus strains were evaluated in both probiotic and paraprobiotic forms to compare their antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory effects, and protective efficacy in a DSS-induced ulcerative colitis mouse model.
Equipment Application
The MRX A2000 Microplate Reader was used to measure optical density (OD) during multiple antioxidant and cytoprotective assays performed in this study. These included the DPPH radical scavenging assay, hydroxyl radical scavenging assay, superoxide anion radical scavenging assay, and Caco-2 cytoprotective activity assay. Accurate absorbance measurement is an essential step for evaluating antioxidant capacity and cellular protection in colorimetric microplate-based assays.
Assay Overview
Radical scavenging assays are widely used to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of biological samples by measuring their ability to neutralize reactive radicals. In addition, Caco-2 cytoprotective assays assess whether samples protect intestinal cells against oxidative stress through cell viability measurements. Together, these assays provide complementary information for investigating antioxidant function and cellular protection in life science research.
