POP Applied to Ascorbic Acid Solubility and Thermodynamic Analysis
This Research Highlight introduces a published study demonstrating the use of the POP UV-Vis spectrophotometer for ascorbic acid solubility analysis. Published in the International Journal of Thermophysics (2022), the study measured the solubility of ascorbic acid in eight pure solvents and evaluated the results using thermodynamic models. Research Background and Purpose
Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is widely used as a pharmaceutical raw material, and accurate solubility data are essential for designing crystallization and purification processes. In this study, the solubility of ascorbic acid was measured over a temperature range of 293–313 K in eight pure solvents. The experimental results were then correlated using the modified Apelblat, λh, and Van’t Hoff models, and thermodynamic properties of dissolution were also evaluated.

Equipment Application
The POP UV-Vis spectrophotometer was used to determine the concentration of saturated ascorbic acid solutions in eight pure solvents. Standard solutions were measured at the wavelength of maximum absorbance to construct calibration curves, and the concentrations of unknown samples were determined by interpolation. Accurate absorbance measurement is essential for obtaining reliable solubility data using the UV-Vis calibration curve method.

Assay Overview
The UV-Vis calibration curve method determines sample concentration by comparing the absorbance of an unknown sample with a calibration curve prepared from standard solutions. In this study, calibration curves were prepared separately for each solvent and used to quantify the concentration of saturated ascorbic acid solutions. The resulting concentration data were then converted into solubility values for thermodynamic analysis.
